SSHS girls relay team sets school record

— The Steamboat Springs High School track and field team finished its regular season Thursday and Friday at the Tiger Invitational in Grand Junction, a last-chance meet for state qualification.

The Sailors took advantage of this final meet in a big way when the girls’ 3,200-meter relay team not only dismantled its own personal record, but also broke the school record with a time of nine minutes, 52.79 seconds, winning the race by almost two seconds over Eagle Valley.

Comprised of seniors Alexandra Tumminello, Allison Casey, Kathleen O’Connell and freshman Winter Boese, the relay team broke its previous mark by nearly 20 seconds and broke the school record, set in 1992, by nearly seven seconds.

Most importantly, the time takes the foursome from being on the bubble to likely headed to the state meet, which begins Thursday in Lakewood. The full list of qualifiers will be announced Sunday.

Casey declared to race in the 400-meter dash at state, though she is just outside the current qualifying time and will need others to opt out in order to compete. Unified athletes Jon Ruehle and Cade Rowan are already registered and will compete at state.
