Sports Authority in Steamboat Springs not on list of store closures

Steamboat location is not on list of company closures

Sports Authority store manager Dan Harvey wheels out apparel on the sales floor on Wednesday. The Steamboat Springs location is not on the list of stores Sports Authority plans to close after filing for bankruptcy protection.

— Managers and employees at the Sports Authority in Steamboat Springs are breathing a sigh of relief.

After enduring weeks of uncertainty, gloomy national headlines about their company and constant questions from customers about the store’s future, manager Dan Harvey said his store at Wildhorse Marketplace recently learned it is not among the 142 stores Sports Authority is reportedly closing following a bankruptcy filing.

“We’re not going anywhere,” Harvey said Wednesday morning as he described how he was confident the store’s performance would keep it in business. “We’re all very relieved. (A closure) would affect a lot of people in the community. I just don’t know what I’d do.”

Harvey said the store typically employes about 25 to 30 people at a time.

The Denver Post is reporting the Englewood-based Sports Authority filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and hopes to reorganize so it can start to get rid of a whopping $1.1 billion in debt.

The Post reported the company is expecting to shed 3,400 of its 15,000 employees and it will close three Colorado locations, all in the Denver and Boulder areas.

Harvey opened the Steamboat Sports Authority location as a Gart Sports in 2004.

He said the store remains profitable.

“I was pretty confident in our store in what we do and our profitability going forward in our market,” he said. “There’s definitely a demand in our market for a store like ours.”

Harvey said he believes the bankruptcy protection and the reorganization of the company will make his store and the company stronger in the longer run.

“Maybe we’ll have a little bit more flexibility now,” he said.

Sports Authority has 464 total stores.
