Rangely was too powerful and moved the ball too well. The Soroco High School volleyball team, meanwhile, made too many errors and couldn’t find a formula to slow the Panthers.

In the end, it amounted to a three-game loss for the Rams, who just a day before had blasted Plateau Valley in three.

Rangely won Saturday, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-21.

The Rams knocked Plateau Valley out Friday night, 25-12, 25-19 and 25-11.

“Rangely’s a really good team, and we just fell a little behind,” junior Corey Snyder said. “We’ve beat a lot of really good teams, but this game was just a downfall.”

Rangely controlled Saturday’s match basically from the final notes of the national anthem.

The Panthers moved the ball well throughout the afternoon. Soroco consistently found ways to get a pair of arms in front of hitters, but even that rarely stopped Rangely from recording points.

It used big runs to open up games, turning a tight 11-9 affair in the first game to a 20-13 snoozer.

It wiped away a 6-5 Soroco lead in the second game to go up 16-9 then 20-11.

The largest lead in the third game was 15-9.

“We have to go out and play our game, and when we don’t, we fall apart,” Rams coach Kim Reeves said. “What killed us were our own errors, our service errors and hitting errors. Those are the things we can control, and we’re messing them up. We have to control those and send the ball back on their side so they can make an error.”

Soroco didn’t always find a way to respond, but, especially in the third game, it did offer a challenge.

After trailing, 15-9, the Rams rallied on the strength of Snyder’s serve. She pulled her team within one, 17-16, with an ace. Ceanna Rossi made it 18-17 with a kill and then combined with Shelby Miles for a block that tied the score at 18.

“We picked up our intensity a lot more. We were working together better,” Snyder said. “We were really aggressive and ran a lot of quick plays.”

That tie was a hump Soroco never got over. In fact, the Rams scored only three more points, giving away opportunities with a few poor sets and bad passes.

As for the difference between a streaking Soroco and a stumbling one, Snyder said it’s the same thing that’s plagued the team all year.

When things go bad, players quickly grow frustrated and play immediately deteriorates.

“We get mad at each other, and we get down on ourselves,” she said.
