Soroco NHS to hold benefit dinner for Johnsons

— Even though they have been retired for many years, longtime Oak Creek residents Bob and Renee Johnson still seem to be making an impression on the current Soroco High School students.

On Tuesday, the Soroco National Honor Society will hold a benefit dinner in their honor.

"I think everybody had in the back of their minds that it would be good to do it for Bob and Renee," said Soroco senior and NHS member Eric Logan. "All the members of NHS are going to be cooking and supplying food. We will have a big dinner, so everybody that comes will pay at the door and all the proceeds will go to Bob and Renee. It's a fundraiser for them."

Bob was 26 when he moved to Oak Creek in 1965 in what was supposed to be a temporary stop. Instead, he made South Routt a permanent home where he spent decades as a teacher and coach before retiring in the late 90s.

In 2002, the Soroco High School gymnasium was named after him.

"Coach, he still comes around and helps with basketball," Logan said. "He is kind of the 'shot doctor.' He also keeps up the parks and the football fields; he mows the football field and whatnot. They still help a lot in the community."

His wife, Renee, was a longtime nurse for the elementary school and is a former president of the Historical Society of Oak Creek and Phippsburg. She is currently battling stage four cancer.

"They are just great members of the community and everybody loves them," Logan said. "We are just trying to give back to them a little bit."

Tuesday's benefit dinner will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. inside the high school cafeteria in Oak Creek. Cost is $8 for adults, less for children, with all the proceeds going directly to the Johnsons. A Thanksgiving-style dinner will be served, including ham, turkey, stuffing and dessert.

"There is plenty of food," Logan said. "Everything helps. It all goes to them."
