Soroco nabs titles

The girls track and field team came in fifth, while the boys placed second for Soroco at the Phelan-Alexander Invitational hosted by Vail Christian on Saturday.
Picking up a first-place finish for the girls was the 400-meter relay team of junior Melissa Roy, junior Nichole Wilson, sophomore Kyla Schmidt and junior Karli Babcock in 54.1 seconds.
The same quartet finished second in the 800-meter relay in 1:53.9 and in the sprint medley in 1:58.80.
Rams coach Gary Heide said cold, windy conditions and getting back from prom were on the minds of many of Soroco’s athletes Saturday.
The Rams took the opportunity to enter multiple relays in events, allowing more than one team to score points.
The team of freshman Jenny Block, senior Leah Hendrickson, freshman Toni Lombardi and junior Mindy McElroy took fourth in the sprint medley in 2:09.61, while Block, Hendrickson, Lombardi and freshman Allie Glaue came in fifth in the 400-meter relay in 59.72.

Individually, several Rams also placed at the Minturn track. Schmidt won the long jump, leaping 14 feet, 11 1/4 inches. Roy came in fourth in the 100 meters in 13.47. Junior Colleen Treanor was fourth in the 3,200 meters in 15:01. Babcock placed sixth in the 400 meters in 68.2. Lombardi was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 64.3.
For the boys, three runners placed in the top eight in the 400 meters. Junior Andy deGanahl came in first, and senior Kory Babcock came in second with times of 50.83 and 51.88, respectively. Senior Trevor Ellis placed seventh in 56.6.
The Rams also took first in the 400-meter relay, the 800-meter relay and the 1,600-meter relay. Ellis, junior Tony Iacovetto, Babcock and deGanahl ran a 1:35.4 in the 800-meter relay and a 3:39.6 in the 1,600-meter relay.
Ellis, sophomore Nick Rangel, Iacovetto and senior Matt Cartas were first in the 400-meter relay in 47.0, their best time of the year.
The Rams’ second entry in the 1,600-meter relay placed sixth. Team members were: Lucas Sullivan, Johnny deCosta, Steve Meade and Carl Remick, all freshmen.
In addition, Babcock picked up first place in the long jump with a leap of 18-3. Remick was second in the 300-meter hurdles with a 45.85. Sophomore Kieran Corrigan placed second in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:16 and placed sixth in the 800 in 2:21.
Cartas cleared 5-6 to finish fifth in the high jump.
Senior Brandon Allen finished sixth in the 3,200 meters in 12:43 and placed eighth in the 1,600 with a 5:46.
