STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Soroco girls basketball team got 17 points from Chloe Veilleux in Friday night's district semifinal game against Rangely, but it wasn't enough.
Rangely beat the Rams, 50-40, Friday night at De Beque High School to earn the chance to face top-seeded Meeker in the championship matchup. The Rams will take the court at noon Saturday against Vail Christian School for third- or fourth-place honors.
"They got us at the free throw line," Rams coach David Bruner said. "They shot 24 out of 27, and we were nine for 23. That pretty much sums it up."
Rangely held a 23-20 lead at half time, but the Rams came rolling back in the fourth to cut the lead to four points.
Rangely was the No. 3 seed in the tournament and finished tied for first place in the 2A Western Slope Conference with Meeker with a 10-1 league record.
Rangely, however, closed out the regular season with a nine-game winning streak and are currently ranked No. 9 in the state's RPI rankings, which will be used to seed the regional tournament this week. Meeker is ranked No. 4, and Soroco is currently No. 13.
