Soroco boys basketball team falls to Paonia

Rams play in Denver tourney next week

— The Soroco High School boys basketball team improved its play from Friday to Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to give the team a win.

The Rams lost to Paonia, 62-50, at the Class 2A district tournament Saturday in Rangely. Coach Sam McLeod said his team picked it up after Friday’s loss to Hayden at the tournament.

“We played a lot better today … we executed, for the most part,” McLeod said Saturday afternoon. “We didn’t turn the ball over under pressure, so that was an improvement.”

Paonia slammed Soroco with 3-pointers, however, McLeod said.

“They’re pretty good when they’re a hot-shooting team, and they were on fire,” he said.

The Rams stayed close to the Eagles but never got close enough.

“They pulled ahead in the second quarter, and we chipped it down going into the fourth, but we were never able to quite pick up,” McLeod said.

Cody Miles led Soroco with 13, and Michael Rossi had 11 points.

The team will travel to Denver next weekend for the regional tournament. McLeod said he didn’t know whom Soroco would face.
