Soroco boys basketball overcomes late deficit to beat Rangely

Ben Ingersoll

— It wasn’t pretty early, but it was a sweet finish late for Soroco High School boys basketball as the Rams were able to snag some fourth-quarter turnovers and nail clutch free throws, beating Rangely at the Panthers’ house, 34-32.

“We played well,” Soroco coach Shawn Hayes said. “This was probably the first game they came together and played solid defense throughout. We played all four quarters and overcame our mistakes.”

First-half turnovers and missed free throws allowed Rangely to head into the locker rooms with a 16-15 lead. The Rams were down by six points late in the contest, so Hayes called for full-court pressure defense. The Panthers coughed up the ball at just the right times, and the Rams sank their free throws and subsequently improved to 4-2.

Chance Beaty led Soroco with 10 points. Eric Logan and Carl Rossi each scored eight.

The Rams will host South Park at 4 p.m. Saturday for their home opener.
