The annual Steamboat Springs celebration of winter kicks off in grand fashion tonight with a Olympic Send-off & Community Celebration, and the Warriors Freestyle snowmobilers hope to add some sizzle to the festivities.

The riders will put on a freestyle snowmobiling show beginning at 8 p.m. at the Brent Romick Rodeo Arena in downtown Steamboat Springs at the base of Howelsen Hill. The event will begin shortly after the Olympian Send-off concludes.

"It will be just like what you saw on the X Games," organizer Henry Billet said.

All attention in the rodeo ring will be focused on a massive pile of snow that will serve as the launching point for the tricks the riders plan to throw.

"Basically, we put up a giant pile of snow, then put in a metal take-off ramp," Billet said.

Using a groomer rented from the city, organizers have laid our nearly 400 yards of snow to serve as a landing strip for what should amount to about an 80-foot jump.

Billet said fans can expect to see much of the same style of stunts they would have seen in Aspen last week during the annual ESPN-driven X Games, from no-handed backflips to high-flying tricks off the machine's handlebars. In fact, a number of tonight's riders are X Games veterans, including Sam Rogers, who collected a silver medal at the event in 2008.

The arena will open between 7 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available all day today at Extreme Power Sports on River Road in Steamboat Springs and at the gate. The cost for attendees who also have purchased Winter Carnival buttons is $12 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students who don't have Winter Carnival buttons.
