Ukuleles on Loan

Circulating a nontraditional item, the Bud Werner Memorial Library will offer ukuleles for check out starting Monday.

Using a valid library card, five complete ukulele kits will be available for check out. The kits include lessons, tuners and a "Bud Uke Kit,” which includes a Kala soprano ukulele, a clip-on tuner, an instruction book with DVD and CDs, a laminated list of ukulele resources and a chord chart.

To introduce the new ukuleles to the community, the library will host a kickoff event at 7 p.m. Monday in Library Hall featuring short lessons and the documentary film, "Mighty Uke."

Musician and music teacher Steve Boynton, who owns and operates First String Music, will lead a short introduction in learning how to play the ukulele. His students for this live demonstration will include local library staff who have no ukulele experience, each playing one of the five new ukuleles that will be available for check-out after the evening program.

Jennie Lay, adult programs coordinator at the library, said there will also be a series of ukulele events during the summer including showings of "Rock That Uke" at 7 p.m. July 17, as well as "Life on Four Strings" at 7 p.m. Aug. 1.

Perry-Mansfield Professional Dance Showcase

Pushing the physical boundaries of movement, dancers from the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp will host the Professional Dance Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

The summer professional intensive program is currently underway with 25 college students from 11 universities participating. Each year, Perry-Mansfield invites a professional company for an artistic residency intensive program in which dancers work tirelessly all week and then offer a public performance to showcase their new work.

This year, Perry-Mansfield is hosting Las Vegas project-based contemporary dance company, "chuthis," which showcases the work of artistic director and choreographer Peter Chu, as this year's company-in-residence.

Chu is a graduate from The Juilliard School, and his broad career extends from work with Crystal Pite's Kidd Pivot to "So You Think You Can Dance." He was the rehearsal director for NDT2 — the Nederlands Dance Theatre's second company — and he has danced for Celine Dion.
