School traffic patterns anything but elementary

Soda Creek Traffic Plan

— Parents dropping off their students next week at the new Soda Creek Elementary School will be greeted by a few changes to traffic flow. To help keep things straight, Principal Judy Harris said staff members will surround the outside of the school Monday to help direct parents.

Parents will have two options for dropping off students: driving up Eighth Street to the drop-off circle, or driving toward downtown on Park Avenue and Laurel Street and dropping students off on the sidewalk.

The biggest change for parents will be that cars coming from south or east of the school cannot pull directly into the parking lot in front of the school. They will have to let off their students on the east side of Laurel Street, where the students can then use a crosswalk to get to the school, or drive south to Aspen Street and come up Eighth Street to the school’s entrance. After being dropped off at the front of the school, students will walk to the back of the building near the playground until the school doors open at 8:15 a.m.

Students who walk to school are encouraged to stay on the south side of Eighth Street or the north side of Seventh Street in order to cross at the crosswalks. A crosswalk and crossing guard will be on the east side of Logan Avenue to help students cross Park Avenue.

Bike racks will be available behind the new school, near the playground.

To clarify the changes, Harris will host a parent information meeting at 6 p.m. tonight in the Camp Soda Creek Gym with Steamboat Springs District Facilities Director Rick Denney, Steamboat Springs police Capt. Joel Rae and city engineer Ben Beall.
