September 16, 2001
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education will honor one of its own educators and then recognize three Growth Commission members.
Last school year Cindy Gay received that 2000 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. At a board meeting today, she will be presented with a plaque for her achievement, Steamboat Springs Superintendent Cyndy Simms said.
Furthermore, Growth Comm-
ission members Sally Claassen, Sherry Kammerer and Don Schwartz will be recognized by the board as Friends of Education.
The board also will receive a presentation on Challenge Day, which is Sept. 24 and Sept 25, from Joan Allsbury.
Challenge Day is a day when Steamboat Springs High School students spend time with eighth-grade students in the district to challenge them to make good decisions about drugs, alcohol and in peer group situations, Simms said.

“It’s very successful. They work with (eighth-graders) to challenge them to be the best they can be,” she said.
The meeting is at 6 p.m. today at the George P. Sauer room.
