Sailors wrestlers grapple their way to 5th at Delta tournament

— Competing against some of the premier small school wrestling programs at the Delta Panther Invite during the weekend, the Steamboat Springs contingent had a handful of podium placers en route to a fifth-place finish as a team.

“It was a pretty tough tournament,” Steamboat coach Travis Bryant said. “It was some of the top 1A and 2A and several 3A schools.”

Paonia, last winter’s 2A team state champion, took the Panther Invite title ahead of second-place Delta, which is in Steamboat’s region. The Sailors finished just behind Class 2A Meeker, last season’s third-place team at state.

At 106 pounds, Colton Pasternak took second, Steamboat’s best finish of the weekend. At 120 pounds, Colton Crawford wound up fourth, and at 126, Lance Bryant also took fourth.

Dakota Thvedt finished fifth in a tough 132-pound bracket. Matt Hansen was third at 145, coming on strong after an offseason injury.

“He’s doing great,” Bryant said about Hansen. “He got a Paonia kid and beat him in the semis. I’m pretty sure that kid will take state.”

In the 152-pound draw, Hayden Johnson was fifth. Gage Reynolds made his season debut at 160 pounds and took sixth.

The Sailors will be at the West Grand tournament this weekend along with Hayden and Soroco.
