Sailors set to play for 1st place

— The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team could have fallen to fourth in the Western Slope League if things had gone awry during a Tuesday home game against Rifle.

Instead, the Sailors took care of business, winning 35-23, and now they'll be playing for a share of the Western Slope championship Thursday as they welcome Summit.

Summit won the first matchup between the two teams, 52-42, though Steamboat's been much better since. Once 2-4 in the league, the Sailors have won their last five and now sit 7-4, tied with Eagle Valley, which lost to Summit on Tuesday night, and Glenwood, which Steamboat beat last week.

The Sailors' girls will start Thursday night off at 6 p.m. as they go for their first win of the season in their last opportunity. Summit won the last meeting in overtime, 36-35.

The boys then play at 7:30 p.m.
