Sailors pick up first win of season

Sailors girls lacrosse coach Sarah James described her team’s efforts last weekend as nothing less than great.

The team picked up its first win of the season in a 7-2 contest against Thomas Jefferson in Denver and started showing signs of coming together after finally getting the chance to practice on grass in Steamboat Springs last week.

“We were able to practice on a field all last week,” James said. “It improved our playing so much. Our midfield transitions were really strong. … We came up with nearly all the ground balls and created a lot of turnovers in the midfield that resulted in goals.”

In Denver, Hanna Zittel led the Sailors with four goals and Brittany Innes added two more. Sam Pal scored the other goal for the Sailors.

Unfortunately, the Sailors couldn’t repeat their winning effort in the second game of the day against Grandview.

“We just ran out of steam,” James said.

But despite the lopsided 13-3 score, James said the Sailors came away from the game with some positive results.

“In this game, our defense started working together as a team, and Grandview had to work for every goal they got,” James said.

But in the end, Innes’ two goals and another from Carly Helm were not enough to keep pace with the larger Denver-area school. James said Kelsey Comeau, who played at goal for both games, did an outstanding job against some very hard shooters from Grandview and Thomas Jefferson.
