Sailors out at state tennis

— Chase Adams, playing No. 2 singles for the Steamboat Springs High School boys tennis team, gave his squad one final win on Friday, earning a victory in the playback round of the Class 4A state tennis tournament in Pueblo.

Adams lost his second match, however, ending his run through the tournament and ending the season for the Sailors.

Adams, who advanced to the championship quarterfinals before losing Thursday afternoon, won his first match Friday, beating Mullen's Matt Maiocco, 6-3, 6-3.

"He did what he needed to do and won," coach Joseph O'Dell said.

That advanced him to a match against Aspen's Dillon Leasure.

Leasure won that matchup, 6-0, 6-0.

It was the fourth time this season the two had squared off, and Leasure, playing sharper than he had in the previous meetings, finished off a 4-0 record.

Steamboat advanced all seven of its entries through the regional tournament and to state this season for the first time in recent seasons, but it couldn't build on that success at state. All seven lost in the first two rounds on Thursday and only Adams got a playback opportunity.

"I'm a little disappointed," O'Dell said. "We had some opportunities, and we needed to take advantage of them. Overall, I was disappointed, but everyone at state is good so you can't hang your head too low.

"It was a good season, and we beat some good teams,” O’Dell continued. “Winning regionals was huge for us, but maybe we peaked too early."
