Sailors get tough win in Summit

The Steamboat Springs High School girls volleyball team took an important step Thursday toward securing a spot in the regional tournament, picking up a solid win on the road against Summit.

The Sailors survived an up-and-down match to pull away after five tight sets, 19-25, 25-18, 25-16, 17-25, 15-6.

"I was really, really pleased with the way the kids came out in the fifth after not playing well in the fourth," coach Wendy Hall said. "They definitely did not have the momentum. They came out, and they weren't going to let it go. They were in control from the first serve."

Winning the decisive set is a boost to the squad's hopes of hanging inside the state's top 36 teams and, thus, earning a spot in the regional tournament. Another such win on a trip Saturday to Glenwood Springs would also be helpful.

Thursday, it was a team effort for the Sailors. Micah Feeley racked up 19 kills and went 13 for 13 from the service line. Anna Allsberry had 16 kills, while Este Wilkinson had 11 kills and five blocks. Abi Berlet also tallied five blocks.

"It's a big win for us," Hall said. "Summit's only two slots under us in the rankings right now, so a loss would have been pretty detrimental to our seeding."
