Sailors football falls 48-0 in Conifer

The Steamboat Springs High School football team was boosted Friday by the return of team captain Charlie Harrington, who was sidelined for a game and a half by a pulled hamstring.

But the continuing absence of two other starters, coupled with a strong opponent in the Class 3A Conifer Lobos, proved too much for the squad’s best efforts Friday, and the Sailors lost 48-0.

The defeat drops the Sailors to 0-4 on the season.

Even so, coach Lonn Clementson said he was encouraged by his young teams effort, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

“I feel like we played really well, defensively,” Clementson said,. “Conifer is a really good team, and we made them earn everything they got. We’ve got some younger kids starting — some sophomores on offense — and they’re doing the best they can. Our kids really battled hard.”

He added the Sailors seized an opportunity early on to build momentum, but were unable to capitalize.

“We recovered a fumble early, when the score was 7-0, but unfortunately, we lost a fumble of our own on the very next play,” he said. “We had some momentum, but we gave it right back.”

Clementson said he was also encouraged by the fact that possibly the roughest part of the schedule — four non-conference games against 3A schools — is now in the past. He added these first four matchups have given his team valuable experience going into next weekend’s league opener at 7 p.m. Sept. 30 at Basalt.

“We started the year with a really tough schedule early on,” Clementson said. “Now, we start playing 2A schools.”

Even so, he said, Basalt is not to be underestimated. The Longhorns are 2-2 on the season and are coming off a 20-8 win Friday against Battle Mountain.

“They’re a really solid team,” he said. “We’re really going to have our hands full next week.”

In preparation, he said, the team will spend the next week reviewing film from the past four games and improving on strong points while eliminating weaknesses.

“We’re really proud of our start tonight,” Clementson said. “Our kids went in with great enthusiasm, and they battled hard.”
