Sailors earn split on home mats
January 28, 2015
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School wrestling team shined at home Tuesday night, earning a tough split with a pair of regional teams.
The Sailors beat Eagle Valley, 42-39, and lost to Glenwood Springs, 45-27.
The win against Eagle Valley showed the team's strength. It gave up forfeit wins at four weights while taking forfeit wins at three. Of contested matches, Steamboat won four to Eagle Valley's three, and all of the Sailors wins came via pin. That little fact proved to be important, too.
Colton Pasternak at 106 pounds won with a first-period pin. Kyle Spognardi, at 113, won with a late third-period pin. Matthew Hansen at 145 and Hayden Johnson at 152 also both won with first period pins.
RJ Wilhelm at 138 and Colten Crawford at 126 both lost their matches via pin, but Dakota Thvedt lost by decision, 9-2.
A win by pin is worth six points. A win by points is worth three, so while Thvedt didn't win, his avoiding a pin allowed the team a three-point win in the matchup.

Miles Buchan, Gage Reynolds and Dylan Wallace all won via forfeit.
The team didn't win its dual against Glenwood, but it wrestled just as well as it did against Eagle Valley. The Sailors won five matches outright and one by forfeit, giving up four pins and four forfeits to Glenwood Springs.
The Sailors got a quick pin from Hansen at 145 pounds. He won in just 35 seconds.
Reynolds at 160, Pasternak at 106 and Spognardi at 113 all pinned their opponents, as well. Crawford won his match with a 5-0 decision and Buchan won with a forfeit.
That wasn't enough to make up for the four forfeits Steamboat gave up, all in the higher weights.
