Routt County United Way’s fourth annual Community Thanksgiving dinner fulfilling to many

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Feeding 850 people is no small feat.
Yet the volunteers made it look easy Thursday at the fourth annual Routt County United Way Community Thanksgiving Dinner.
"It's really inviting and welcoming," said Molly Mcvey, who was visiting with her family from Lawrence, Kansas for the holiday. "There are probably a lot of visitors who come to Steamboat Springs, and it feels really nice to be welcomed into this community and able to be apart of something like this."
Sweet potatoes and peanut butter pie were among their favorite dishes, but McVey said they were most grateful for the turkey because she knows the time it takes to prepare.
Throughout the day, roughly 35 turkeys, 150 sides — including stuffing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, green beans, etc. – along with 35 pies and a wide assortment of desserts were served.
According to Ali Schrader, program manager for Routt County United Way, this year's turn out saw an increase in attendees.

"For a lot of people, I think it's becoming more of a tradition each year," said Schrader. "It's event for everyone and is really inclusive for all of Routt County."
Chefs from restaurants such as Salt & Lime helped carve the turkeys and were among about 250 volunteers of all ages who greeted people, served and restocked food.
Whatever the reasoning for attending this Thanksgiving, it was a moment to enjoy a meal inside or near the playground while conversing with old and new faces in the community.
