— By all accounts, Wednesday's Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series event — the Thunderhead Hill Climb at Steamboat Ski Area — was a quad-burning, sweat-soaking slog up a trail at times so steep that some of this mountain-bike-crazy town's best riders had to hop off and push to a flat section before saddling back up to charge onward and upward.

Those descriptions were in their words, but aside from the occasional teeth-clenching grimace or forlorn glance to see how much farther, they weren't in their faces or their actions.

"It was amazing," said men's sport rider Garett Mariano, assaulting one of Mount Werner's most popular trails for the first time this summer. "The last 50 yards of the race, there was another guy, and we kept going back and forth. The whole time we kept saying, 'You got it, man,' pumping each other up."

It was with smiles and high-fives, thumbs up and fist pumps that 153 riders won their battle Wednesday with Steamboat's most popular mountain and perhaps the Town Challenge's most daunting race.

"This is the hardest in my book," racer Kyleigh DeMicco said. "It's the people that make it fun. The mentality and the morale is just a lot of fun."

Barkley Robinson won for the men. The course, on the Zig Zag trail, was 4.5 miles long and featured an elevation gain of 2,000 feet. Robinson conquered it in 31 minutes, 59 seconds.

Brad Bingham was second in 32:04, and Peter Kalmes was third at 34:07.

Tammy Jacques Grewal broke Kelly Boniface's grip in the women's division, winning the uphill slog in 37:38. Boniface was second at 40:32, and Amy Charity was third in 43:50.

But as much as the evening was about times and places for some of the area's top talent, for most it was about personal goals.

Base area construction forced the race to start a little higher on the mountain than it traditionally does, from the base of the Christie III lift instead of the base of the gondola.

Warm low-elevation temperatures and a relative lack of shade — much of the forested lower section of the trail has been cleared of beetle-killed trees — were just some of the obstacles riders faced. The course wound through aspen groves and cut tight corners as it slowly worked its way up.

The pack chugged up long inclines, but many ran out of gas on short and steep portions, being forced to push even as the finish line loomed within sight, a few hundred feet up the final stretch.

"You set little goals," Mariano said. "You look at that hill in front of you and you say, 'I'm going to make this one.' Then you charge it and make it. Then, you set your sights on the next one and charge that one, and hope you don't get passed along the way.

"I'm racing myself out there. I'm racing the guy in front of me, too, but really, this is all about having fun. I'm trying to better myself."

Slurping down popsicles and laughing loud as they cooled down and the sun set, it was apparent plenty of people were happy with their accomplishment.

"It was painful," DeMicco admitted, smiling wide. "The Town Challenge is such a fun race, a fun group of people. I'm definitely happy I did it and happy I made it to the top."
