Richard races to personal best, leads Steamboat boys at state

Steamboat Springs' Annika Malacinski crosses the finish line in 16th place during the skate race at the Colorado State High School Skiing Championships Thursday afternoon. Malacinski, a freshman, was the top finisher from Steamboat Springs High School.

— Steamboat Springs Tanner Richard put together one of his best races of the season at the Colorado High School State Skiing Championships as he finished 20th in the boys race Thursday afternoon at the Steamboat Ski Touring Center.

"It felt awesome. I had a good race," Richard said at the finish line. "I feel like I did pretty well, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's my best race of the season."

Coach Jesse Wilkins said he was thrilled that his skier broke into the top-20 and it was something Richard had been striving for all season.

"We think he got top-20, which is something that he hasn't done all season,” Wilkins said before the official results were posted. “That would be awesome for him."

Richard led a large group of Steamboat Springs skiers on the challenging 5K freestyle course with a time of 16 minutes, 48.27 seconds. Teammates Matai Curzon finished 34th at 17:42.06, Alex Coffey was 44th at 18:10.69, Quinn Wellman was 48th at 18:16.89, Andrew McCawley was 50th at 18:22.06 and Gabe Rabenal was 51st at 18:25.09.

The boys’ race came down to the wire with four skiers finishing less than a second apart.
