Rash of thefts from vehicles hit Frisco

Summit Daily News

According to Detective Julie Polly from the Frisco Police Department, there’s recently been a rash of thefts from unlocked vehicles throughout Frisco, as well as Summit County.

“The thieves are taking cash, credit cards, electronics and other valuables,” Polly said in an e-mail. “In cases where the keys to the vehicle have been left inside, the vehicle itself has been stolen.”

She recommends people “consider locking the doors to your vehicle when parked to avoid the loss of your personal property and the distress the loss causes.”

Polly said unlocked cars have specifically been targeted and that cars that are locked have been passed by in the search for an easier target.

“We’d love to see folks taking this simple step to deter crime,” she said.

Silverton picks up acreage to be used for heli skiing

Silverton Mountain has acquired a permit to use 15,000 acres of public land for helicopter skiing. Owner Aaron Brill bought the permit from Telluride-based Helitrax, which has offered helicopter skiing on 160,000 acres around Telluride since 1982.

The permit includes several 13,500-foot peaks, making it one of the world’s highest helicopter-skiing operations. Silverton now provides its notoriously steep-and-scary ski experience on nearly 23,000 acres.

In keeping with Brill’s initial vision for affordable and frill-free skiing, he is offering single drops for $159, making him one of the only helicopter outfits in the world that offer one-time hits.

Arapahoe Basin needs a name for its new ski lift

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area will begin construction this summer on a new Leitner-Poma detachable quad chairlift to replace the Exhibition fixed-grip triple chair installed in 1978. Ride time at top speed will be less than three minutes, about half the time of the current ride from base area to mid-mountain.

The ski area is taking suggestions for the name of the new lift, offering a 2010-11 Arapahoe Basin season pass or $300 gift certificate to Arapahoe Sports to the person with the winning suggestion.
