Rally falls short for Soroco boys
January 13, 2015
Oak Creek — For much of Tuesday night's game, the Vail Christian boys basketball team seemed one or two good possessions away from putting Soroco away.
The Saints led 8-0 right out of the gate and had a double-digit lead several times in the second half.
They couldn't put down a resilient Rams squad until overtime, scoring 11 points in the extra frame to beat Soroco in Oak Creek, 62-57.
"It was crazy. We went to overtime here last year, as well, so I had flashbacks from that," Vail senior Cooper Gould said. "That was big, against a big league opponent."
A furious late fourth-quarter rally put Soroco in contention.
The Rams trailed 40-30 in the third but outscored Vail nearly 2-1 for the rest of regulation. Eric Logan connected off a Vail turnover to cut the lead to three, then Storm Veilleux scored in the lane to make it 48-47 with 1 minute, 50 seconds to go.

Vail got out in front one more time, but Logan sank a 3-point shot with 11 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
"We definitely let it slip away, and (Logan) hit that awesome three at the end. It was super exciting," Gould said.
Another Logan trey, with 2:05 left in OT, brought the Rams within one, 56-55, but Vail controlled the extra time. Gould scored seven of his 15 points in overtime and had a big block defensively.
"Every time you lose it's disappointing but coming back from that felt good," Logan said. "It was bittersweet.
"We always come out with hustle, but we have been coming out shooting flat. We need to hit a few shots at the beginning to get going."
Ethan Ellsworth scored 24 for Vail. Logan had 24 for Soroco, and Warren Hayes had 10.
Soroco dropped to 6-4 and next plays Saturday at home against De Beque. Vail is 5-3 and plays Friday at De Beque.
