Race to the Cup returns Friday to Howelsen

The Steamboat Springs Alpine snowboard squad is coming off a strong showing last weekend and locals won't have to wait to see just what the team can do.

The annual Race to the Cup snowboard event will fly into Steamboat Springs on Friday for two days of action at Howelsen Hill.

Races begin at 2 p.m. Friday with the first qualifier runs. A second qualifier run follows at 3 p.m. and finals are slated to take place under the lights, at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the race is back on the hill with qualification runs starting at 11 a.m. and finals slated to begin at 2 p.m.

Winter Sports Club riders will be looking to build upon success they had last weekend at Buck Hill, Minnesota.

On the first day there, A.J. Muss led the way for the team, winning the event. Billy Winters was fourth. Mike Trapp and Steve McCutcheon tied for fifth. Gaelen Scheidel-Webb was 10th, Converse Fields was 13th, Ryan Rosencranz was 14th, Oliver Vashon was 15th and Robbie Burns was 16th.

On the women's side, Lynn Ott shined and placed third. Katie Keough was seventh and Hillary Bond was 10th.

Ott was even better one day later, winning the day's event. Keough was eighth and Bond was 10th.

Muss backed up his win with another, again taking the gold. McCutcheon was sixth, Trapp was 10th, Fields was 11th, Burns was 12th, Rosencranz was 13th, Schiedel-Webb was 14th and Winters was 15th.

In a juniors race, Winters was second, Miles Silverman was fifth, Christian De Oliveira was ninth, Conrad Sacher was 11th, Marc Chasse was 12th and Riley Kilmer-Choi was 13th.
