Poor shooting sink Hayden boys in league matchup

Hayden High School Tigers

The Hayden High School boys basketball team knew it had an opportunity Saturday when it hit the road to play at Caprock Academy. That's part of what made the loss in that game, 33-29, so difficult, coach Mike Luppes said.

"Itw as a kick in the teeth," he said. "We played well enough to win, but we just could not score.

"We couldn't have thrown the ball in the ocean if we were standing in it. We just shot terrible."

The game was surely one both teams had circled. Hayden entered 1-9 while Caprock was 0-9.

"We had the shots, too, easy shots, a lot of them" Luppes said. "We just couldn't get them to go down."

Hayden got a team-high nine points from Daylon Frentress. Reese Kern added six off the bench and Luppes said Mason Brewer had a strong game distributing the ball.

"It was close the entire game and they made a few plays at the end and we didn't," Luppes said. "It shouldn't have come down to that. We should have had the game put away."

Next up is a tough weekend of travel for the Tigers. They play Friday in Hotchkiss, then hurry back home for a Saturday game against West Grand.

"The boys keep playing hard and that's what we're asking of them," Luppes said. "Hopefully some of these wins will start coming soon."

Elsewhere, the Hayden girls team beat Caprock 58-24 for its third win of the season.

Soroco also played on the road against Caprock. The girls won 64-12 to improve to 9-3 on the season. The boys won 53-27 to bump their record to 3-9.
