Hayden — There will be plenty of room to picnic in Hayden next year.
Town officials learned Tuesday that Hayden was awarded a $6,000 Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. Contribution Fund grant. The grants are awarded for parks, recreation or cultural capital projects to be completed in 2007.
The town originally planned to build two small, covered picnic areas as part of the Phase 2 expansion of Dry Creek Park. But because of the grant money, Hayden will build a large covered pavilion instead.
Hayden Town Manager Russ Martin said the pavilion will be better for the community because it will allow for larger community events as well as private events such as weddings.
“Essentially it will be one main event center,” Hayden Parks and Recreation Coordinator Kathy Hockett said. “It’s very good news, and that’s the first grant I’ve written since I got here.”

Hockett began working for the town in September, and one of the biggest jobs she has is working on the expansion of Dry Creek Park.
“I’m just excited to be a part of this whole change,” Hockett said.
The town is working with Landmark Consultants to get construction drawings ready for the Dry Creek Park expansion. The town also is waiting to hear whether it will be awarded a $200,000 grant for the park. If the town receives that grant, $800,000 could be put into expanding the park.
In addition to the picnic area, plans call for two full-size ball fields, a smaller field, paths, a concession stand, restrooms and storage.
Hockett said the town is working with the Hayden Heritage Center to incorporate ideas into the walkways and park structures so that the park is unique to Hayden.
“We want it to show Hayden’s heritage,” Hockett said.
Construction on the park expansion is expected to begin in the spring.
