Penalty kicks sink Sailors in playoffs

Steamboat Springs senior Andrew McCawley attempts to block a shot during an overtime shoot-out Wednesday in the first round of the state playoffs on the road against Silver Creek High School.

The Steamboat Springs High School boys soccer team proved every bit a match for Silver Creek during regulation and overtime on Wednesday.

The game went to penalty kicks, however, and there the Sailors’ season ended.

Steamboat, the No. 25 seed in the Class 4A tournament, lost at No. 8 Silver Creek, on penalty kicks, 5-4 after the game ended regulation and overtime tied 2-2.

Steamboat got regulation goals from Ross VanHara and Will Beurskens, both on penalty kicks. The teams then played two scoreless overtime periods. Beurskens, VanHara, Lane Salyer and Will McConnell all converted on their penalty kick opportunities, but senior Cruz Archuleta, the team's leading scorer through the season, couldn't convert his chance. Silver Creek was perfect, making all five and winning the game.

Steamboat finishes the season 11-5.

The loss was eerily similar to a playoff clash last spring between the Steamboat and Silver Creek girls teams, only with a different result. The teams were tied, 1-1, after two overtime periods. Steamboat went on to win, 3-2, in penalty kicks.
