Paul Bonnifield: Coal miners need to take note of Tipton’s proposal
June 21, 2017
Rep. Scott Tipton’s commentary on his proposed American Energy Act is an eye opener.
Every Routt County coal miner knows that the strength of western coal is its low sulfur content. Eastern coal has higher BTUs, and it is 1,000 miles nearer the largest market area.
Simply put, it is better coal and can be shipped with a lower freight rate. Without the EPA’s requirement on SO2, western coal mining would not exist. Tipton’s American Energy Act does not include the EPA’s low sulfur component.
All you coal miners better take a hard look at the American Energy Act and see what it means for you in regards sulfur regulations and marketing western coal.
