Pathologist determines Chris Johns’ death caused by epilepsy
April 3, 2018
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A pathologist has determined that Steamboat Springs business owner Chris "Johnsie" Johns, 51, died from complications related to epilepsy.
The official cause of death was listed as sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, or SUDEP.
According to the Epilepsy Foundation, SUDEP is the sudden, unexpected death of someone with epilepsy, who was otherwise healthy.
"Each year, about one in 1,000 adults and one in 4,500 children with epilepsy die from SUDEP," the foundation states on its website. "This is the leading cause of death in people with uncontrolled seizures."
The exact cause of death in SUDEP is unknown, according the foundation, but some researchers believe it may be related to difficulty breathing or an irregular heart rhythm caused by a seizure.
Friends and family are hosting events this weekend to celebrate Johns' life.
