Pamela Anne Walter, 1955-2005
October 29, 2005
Steamboat Springs resident Pamela Anne Walter died Oct. 18, 2005, at her home after a yearlong fight with stomach cancer. She was 50.
Pam was born May 7, 1955, in San Diego to Richard E. and Anne Elizabeth (Reichert) Tucker. Her parents moved to Ontario, Calif., in 1958, where she grew up. She graduated from Chaffey High School in Ontario in 1973 and attended Chaffey Junior College for one year before enrolling at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Although she began her studies as a math major, after two years, she redirected her studies to developmental psychology. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1978 and received her California teaching credential in 1979.
A decision during the summer of 1979 put her life on a different course. Responding to a job placement ad for a teaching position in Hayden, Pam was offered a teaching position at Hayden Elementary School, never expecting to make the area her permanent home.
She lived in Steamboat Springs and carpooled with a group of six teachers for six years.
She taught in Hayden until 1985, and after taking a year off from teaching, she was hired to teach second grade at Soda Creek Elementary School. In 1992, she moved to Strawberry Park Elementary School, teaching kindergarten to fourth grade. She most recently taught first grade.
Pam met her husband, Bruce “Abe” Walter, in 1982, and they were married at the Scandinavian Lodge in Steamboat Springs on July 13, 1985. During their 20 years of marriage, they were blessed with two children, Alyssa, 15, and Casey, 9, both born in Steamboat.
