Outage cuts power in South Routt

Steamboat Pilot & Today

— Severe lightning strikes left approximately 2,200 Yampa Valley Electric Association customers in South Routt in the dark for about eight hours Monday night, but YVEA crews reported power had been restored by early Tuesday morning.

According to Tammi Strickland, communications and public relations manager for YVEA, the outage occurred when a lightning strike cut transmission to the Keystone substation about 8:30 p.m. Monday.

“Lightning struck a static wire on our transmission line in a remote area that was surrounded by Trout Creek,” Strickland said. “That’s what took so long.”

Strickland said crews were out all night repairing the problem and had restored power by 4:46 a.m.
