OT win sends Steamboat boys to Shoot-Out title game

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team will play for the championship of its own tournament Saturday following a thrilling 58-56 overtime win Friday against Colorado Academy in the Steamboat Shoot-Out.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” coach Michael Vandahl said. “They really locked into our defensive game plan and executed it well. Colorado Academy is a quality team, really skilled, and we’re really proud of how our guys managed to compete tonight.”

Steamboat got big games from across its roster, including a huge one from sophomore Ethan Pyles, who poured in 17 points and went 4-for-4 from 3-point range, draining bombs his team needed down the stretch. He picked up extra minutes when Sailors’ senior Jake Berry went down early with an injury, and he made the most of them.

Mac Riniker led the team with 19 points and had a stat-sheet filling kind of night, with 11 rebounds, eight assists, three charges and one steal.

Aden Knaus also had nine points, including a big 3-point shot of his own.

The win sets the Sailors into the championship game at 2:15 p.m. at Steamboat Springs High School against Roosevelt, which beat Moffat County to open the tournament, then Friday beat Northridge.

“They’re very up-tempo and we have two contrasting styles,” Vandahl said. “We have to control the pace of the game to have a chance, so that will be a good challenge for us.”
