On the Market: Hospital eyes pond site for senior living location
February 7, 2010
Yampa Valley Medical Center announced this week that a parcel of land adjacent to Casey's Pond on Walton Creek Road is the planned location for a new senior living community.
The community is expected to offer a range of senior housing to include independent living and assisted living apartments, Alzheimer's and dementia-related "memory care" units and relocation of the existing skilled nursing units currently at the Doak Walker Care Center.
YVMC and Pearl Senior Living evaluated more than 30 potential sites in the valley before they arrived at the decision to pursue the 5.5-acre site east of Casey's Pond off U.S. Highway 40 and Walton Creek Road. Pearl is a senior housing company engaged by YVMC to advise on the project.
"The property meets key project objectives including site capacity, proximity to health care services, access to community activities and scenic surroundings," YVMC CEO Karl Gills said.
Pearl conducted three meetings last week that were attended by local seniors and children of seniors who may consider the expanded services proposed in the senior community.
"The participants were very enthusiastic and excited about the location," said Tom Finley, a Pearl principal who conducted the focus groups.

Steamboat left off list of impressive ski homes
CNBC cable news network recently released a list of America's 10 most impressive ski homes, but Steamboat's grandest second homes apparently weren't impressive enough.
Tops on the list was a 15,478-square-foot see-through house on Aspen's Red Mountain, valued at $35 million. Another Aspen home was second on the list at $24.95 million, and a home in Jackson ranked third in terms of wow factor — it's priced at $29.5 million.
New England is represented on the list by a $16 million home in Stowe, Vt. Other ski areas that made the list include Park City, Utah, and Sun Valley, Utah.
The closest home to the Yampa Valley is down Colorado Highway 13 at Arrowhead in the Vail Valley, where Chateau de mon reve (castle of my dreams) has seven bedrooms. For $11.95 million, you get a 25-foot waterfall in the outdoor dining area and a bunch of bathrooms. The home is listed for sale by Realtor Sondra Slappy.
