Obituary: James R. Winter

September 9, 1937 – March 6, 2018

James R. (Jim) Winter, age 80, from Steamboat Springs, Co passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday March 6, 2018 surrounded by loving family. He was born on September 9, 1937 in Bismarck, ND. Jim attended the University of North Dakota where he met his wife Judy. They were married for 57 years and have three daughters Katherine (Tom) Ziegler, Suzy (Paul) Neumann and Kim (Tim) Pepera.
Jim was a banker in Grand Forks, Valley City and Minot North Dakota before moving to Steamboat Springs where they found their forever home. He finished his banking career at the age of 55 at which point he was able to enjoy his beautiful mountain surroundings. He loved the outdoors and became a proficient skier and snow boarder, he built a mountain cabin home and spent endless hours hunting and hiking in the land he loved.
Jim was a very compassionate man with a deep love for his family, animals (his dogs; dusty, honey, and magic) and his community. He was very active in Young Life, Lift Up and his church. His final act of compassion was tissue donation. Multiple recipients have already benefited from his gift.
Jim is preceded in death by his granddaughter Jordan Elizabeth. He will be greatly missed by his wife, daughters and sons- in- laws as well as his brother Art (Suzy) Winter, his eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church in Steamboat Springs on Saturday, March 10that 2:00pm. A visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be directed to organizations that reflect Jim’s passions including; Lift Up of Routt County, Concordia Lutheran Church, and Colorado Parks and Wild Life.
