Maynard P. Short
February 16, 2017
Maynard P. Short, of Oak Creek, Co., died Sunday, February 5, 2017 after a short battle with lung cancer. He was 83.
A decades-long resident of Routt County, Maynard moved to the area drawn by world-class fly fishing waters and the pursuit of mining engineering, but quickly became one of South Routt's most recognizable local characters. His absence will leave a hole in the hearts and lives of many residents.
With a full head of brilliant, white hair, his quick, dry and clever wit punctuated by a twinkle in his clear, blue eyes, his entry into a room rarely went unnoticed. A connoisseur of fine wines, admirer of beautiful women, lover of art, instigator of many a practical joke and more than a little local gossip, Maynard will be sorely missed.
The world traveler's professional life includes credits from the Pentagon and The New York Times, but Maynard's desire for knowledge was evident in everything he did, from starting his own mining engineering companies to becoming a fixture in the local newspaper's "Letters to the Editor" column. An insatiable reader, his love of politics fueled thought-provoking, although playfully mischievous, public dialogue that earned him the endearingly descriptive nickname "curmudgeon" within local circles. Still, more often than not, Maynard's creative antics were the sources of many a laugh and perhaps a few intended offenses.
Please join us for Maynard Short's Celebration of Life, at 3 p.m., Sunday, February 19, at The Colorado Bar and Grill in Oak Creek.
