Genevieve Gladys Scarlett passed away on March 16, 2016 at the age of 83.
Genevieve was born in Nebraska on February 16, 1933. In the fall of 1947,
she moved to Craig, Colorado with her family. She lived in Craig with her
father, Archie Seals, her mother, Mary Seals (McEntee), and her siblings
Gene (Farr), Patricia (Mitchell), Shirley (Seeley), Jim Seals, and Mary Jane
(Wakins).
Genevieve was married to Edwin Scarlett on April 28, 1953. At the time of their wedding, Edwin was serving in the Korean War. Genevieve was a strong, independent Navy wife for 35 years and raised 4 children while living in Long Beach, CA; Kingsville, TX; Norfolk, VA; San Diego, CA; and Great Lakes, IL before finally settling in Grayslake, IL where she lived for 38 years. Genevieve and Edwin were happily married for 63 years.
Genevieve worked throughout her life in various roles to supplement her
family’s income. Her proudest job was working on the Naval Base where she aided sailors attending the Recruit Training Command in selecting their commemorative ring. She never rushed the sailors to make a selection and always listened to their stories of home and loved ones. It was her way of giving back and honoring the military branch her husband served. Genevieve’s husband, Edwin, is a Freemason and Shriner and Genevieve participated in the various events of those organizations. Genevieve loved antiques and couldn’t resist an auction, garage sale, or flea market.
Genevieve is survived by her siblings Genie, Shirley, and Jim; her spouse
Edwin; her children Karen, Pamela, and Stephaine; her grandchildren Michael Curtis, Terra, Michelle, Kaylee, Nathaniel, Mary, and Lucy; her great-grandchildren Amber, Malisha, Zachary, Ray, Kayla; and her
great-great-grandchild Aria. Genevieve was preceeded in death by her father Archie Seals, her mother Mary Seals, her sister Patricia Mitchell, her sister Mary Jane Watkins, and her daughter Mary Shireen Proo and grandson Eric Proo.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 3rd at 2pm in the St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
