Obama cruises to Routt County win
McCain, Romney close in Republican caucus
February 5, 2008
Steamboat Springs — Local Democrats threw their weight behind presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama during tonight’s precinct caucuses. With limited returns available, local Republicans appear split between candidates Sen. John McCain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
More than 550 registered Democrats turned out for Routt County’s version of Super Tuesday – more than five times the number that turned out for caucuses in the 2004 presidential election.
With all but the two Hayden precincts reporting, 410 Democrats supported Obama, 136 voted for Sen. Hillary Clinton, and nine were uncommitted.
With most of the city of Steamboat Springs’ precincts reporting their results, 29 Republicans supported McCain, 24 voted for Romney, four backed former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and three cast votes for Ron Paul.
