Oak Creek, Steamboat hold cleaning day

Melinda Dudley

— Old West Sanitation will donate its services during Saturday’s annual Oak Creek Clean-Up Day to help clean up the South Routt town and bring it into compliance with nuisance ordinances on trash accumulation, tall weeds and grass, and other conditions on private property.

As part of the event, Oak Creek residents can discard two pickup loads of material at the football field, but they must bring their town utility bill to verify residency.

Oak Creek has been holding Clean-Up Day for more than a decade, and the turnout is always incredible, Town Clerk Karen Halterman said.

“It’s always overwhelming,” Halterman said. “I don’t know how we get as much trash as we do each year.”

Because Clean-Up Day is intended to benefit residents, concrete, bricks, sand, gravel and other construction debris will not be accepted. Other waste items that cannot be accepted include: any liquid waste including paint, thinners and used oil; batteries; pesticides and herbicides; mattresses and box springs; and refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners unless they are labeled Freon-free.

Steel and appliances will be disposed of separately, so the town is asking residents to separate metals when unloading their vehicles. Tires also will be accepted for a $5 per tire fee to cover the additional landfill charges.
