"Labor Day is the big, signature event for Oak Creek, and this has probably been happening for the past 100 years," said Town Administrator and Clerk Mary Alice Page-Allen. "Some people only make it down to Oak Creek one weekend a year, and this is the weekend."

Organized under the theme, "A Salute of Routt County Ranchers," this year's festivities begin at 5 p.m. Friday, with the Historical Society of Oak Creek and Phippsburg's dedication of the town's 1937 fire truck, and continue through Monday with a wide variety of activities — most of them free of charge — that have been designed to appeal to all ages.

Page-Allen said this is in keeping with the family nature of the celebration.

"Lots of families come in, and there are typically several family reunions scheduled for the same weekend," she said. "It's a big party, and it's a lot of work, but it's also a lot of fun."

The celebration will continue Saturday morning, beginning with a pancake breakfast, hosted by Soroco High School's MS Science Camp, at 7 a.m.

Main Street will be closed Saturday as activities will continue with a fishing derby at 10 a.m.; the annual car show, beginning at noon; and the free family fun day — including a bounce house, a mechanical bull, kids' games, a hula hoop contest, music, a child drawing contest, a beer garden, corn hole and more — starting at noon.

Saturday evening will offer a comedy show with Bruce Gill at 7 p.m., followed by the band Lever Action at 9 p.m., both at the Colorado Bar.

Slated for Sunday are a softball tournament at 9 a.m., museum tours, Chicken Sh*t Bingo and Pony Pie Bingo, a corn hole tournament and a large assortment of vendors.

Sunday will also include an art show from noon to 5 p.m. and a live auction, set for 1 p.m. at the Colorado Bar.

Festivities culminate Monday, with the 6K No Fun Run, beginning at 10 a.m. and the Labor Day Parade, slated for 11 a.m. on Main Street with local ranchers Lynn and Charlotte Whaley serving as grand marshals.

According to Oak Creek Mayor Nikki Knoebel, who also serves as chairwoman of the Oak Creek Labor Day Committee, the town is expecting between 400 and 500 visitors for the festival.

"It will be a great time, which is why we're inviting everyone to come on down and help us celebrate," Knoebel said.
