Oak Creek plans forum

Topics include air quality, transportation and housing

— The Oak Creek Town Board is hosting a community forum next week to discuss issues that play a role in the town’s future development, including air quality, transportation and affordable housing.

“These are sort of countywide issues, and we’re going to bring them in and discuss how they really pertain to us,” Mayor Pro-Tem Angie Krall said.

The forum’s areas of focus are key issues that residents need more information on as Oak Creek works to update its Comprehensive Plan this summer, said Routt County commissioner and Oak Creek resident Nancy Stahoviak, who will moderate the forum.

The town has contracted with Britina Design Group, a Denver-based consulting firm, to examine future areas of growth for Oak Creek and conduct reviews of its building codes and annexation policies. The town’s comprehensive plan got its last revamp in 1996.

Routt County Department of Environmental Health Director Mike Zopf will speak Tuesday about sustainability and air quality. Air quality is an issue Oak Creek has sometimes been hesitant to address in the past, Stahoviak said.

“There are still homes here that are heated with coal stoves,” she said.

Yampa Valley Housing Authority Executive Director Donna Howell and Assistant Director Curtis Church will speak about affordable housing. They plan to address the challenges and opportunities of affordable housing, as they pertain to Oak Creek specifically, Krall said.

Trustee Wendy Gustafson and County Commissioner Diane Mitsch Bush will discuss transportation and give an update on the South Routt Transit Study.

On each topic, there will be time for group discussion, questions and answers, Krall said.

“We’re looking at where the town is now, how it has changed since the last comp plan and where the people want it to be,” Krall said.
