New variety theater show to debut at the Chief Theater after First Friday Artwalk

— Spontaneity, intrigue and sheer comedy are the prime ingredients of a new show that will debut at the Chief Theatre Friday night.

Never taking themselves too seriously, the cast of the Super Fun Steamboat Show will take the stage at 8 p.m. Featuring witty comebacks and satirical innuendos, the show includes sketch comedy, music and singing, improv, local DJ Freeze, juggling and more.

In addition, there will be a different local celebrity interview conducted during each show, which will be held in conjunction with the monthly First Friday Artwalks. This week, auctioneer and longtime local Cookie Lockhart is the featured guest.

"The goal in writing the scripts for the variety shows is to not be afraid of any particular subject, if something is funny, we will go there," said Todd Danielson, who wrote the script for this show and is also one of the characters. "I think this goes there."

Similar to a Pirate Theater show — a Steamboat-based satirical theater production that draws from local peculiarities and personalities for laughs — Danielson said the Super Fun Steamboat Show is meant to give people a chance to be entertained in an uncensored, silly way.

"We, as a community, are all writers of this show, and these skits are appreciating not only the serious issues that come up in town but taking that other look at it and finding the humor and humanity in each of the issues and to not take ourselves so seriously," said Patty Zimmer, long-time local who has been doing variety theater since 2001.

Cast members of the upcoming show were all part of a similar show called “The Monthly Daily Show,” which had a three-month run at the Chief three years ago.

"This is such a great time to get people into the Chief right after the First Friday Artwalk because they are already here to see the exhibits, and we thought a variety show would be a fun addition," said Eric Leach, an actor in the show who has been doing variety theater since 2001. "The show essentially is making the people of Steamboat laugh at the people of Steamboat."

After years of working together in various theater groups, the Super Fun Steamboat Show cast is equipped with shrewd improvisation skills and ad-lib techniques.

"There is a lot of that live aspect of a show,” Zimmer said. “You never know what's going to be said or done on stage, and it's all about reacting to everything in the moment and staying in character and keeping it fun and funny.

“It's not real serious theater but it's serious comedy," Zimmer added.

Tickets for the show are $10 and can be purchased online at http://chieftheater.com or at the Shoe Chalet and Boutique next to the theater. Due to mature content, the show is for adults 18 and over.
