New to another sport, Soroco’s Carlson again one of 2A’s best at state track

LAKEWOOD — Schuyler Carlson is quick to admit he's a beginner when it comes to shot put, an event that seems simple enough but is nevertheless heavily reliant on a thrower's form.

"You'd think it'd be a lot easier, but it's not," said the Soroco High School senior, out for track this spring for the first time.

He knows even less about proper form discus, yet he still managed to qualify for state in both events, and Thursday, Carlson earned a state medal in one of those sports he barely knows, placing seventh in the Class 2A boys shot put competition at the state track and field championships in Lakewood.

Carlson threw 43 feet 8.75 inches, short of his best but good enough to climb on the podium. It's been a podium kind of season for him after he was a key figure in the Soroco football team's run to the 8-man semifinals and went undefeated on his way to winning a Class 2A wrestling state championship.

"Coming from wrestling, I like winning, but you have to take what you can get and this was the best I could do," Carlson said. "It was fun. It was something different and it was fun."

Steamboat also got medals Thursday from pole vaulter Eric Casey and its girls 3,200-meter relay team, but after that a handful of athletes put themselves into good positions to score medals of their own after breaking through Thursday's preliminary races at state.
