Students and staff of Mountain Village Montessori Charter School gathered to celebrate International Day of Peace Thursday with a message and candle-lighting by head of school Michael Girodo and a song.

At exactly 10 a.m., the entire school began singing several rounds of “Light a Candle For Peace,” joining with other Montessori schools across Colorado and filling one time slot of the day’s 24 hours of continuous singing around the world.

Montessori schools in Fiji, New Zealand and Kiribati started off the singing at 10 a.m. local time.

Next, schools a time zone to the west took over, and the song rang on through the day, ending with a final note sung by Hawaiian schools.

Montessori is a method of education adopted in schools in diverse settings on six continents. The philosophy emphasizes individual choice and nurturing the whole child — physical, social, emotional and cognitive — and concepts including peacefulness, kindness and justice.

International Day of Peace was established by the United Nationals General Assembly in 1981; the day is meant to honor all nations and people, to cease hostilities and promote peace awareness and education. The 2017 theme is “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.”
