Meghan Hanson-Peters: Steamboat teacher is an inspiration

Congratulations to my colleague Deirdre Boyd for being selected as the Colorado History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Such a prestigious honor is fitting for an educator who tirelessly works to assure that students examine the struggles we have had in our society in striving to achieve equality, justice and liberty for all.

Deirdre’s passion is evident not only in the classroom but in every aspect of her life, motivating others to get involved to influence policymakers and make change in our world.

The selection committee for Deirdre’s award was comprised of history educators, professors, former recipients of the award and other education professionals. The Gilder Lehrman Institute itself has been honored with awards recognizing its commitment to history education by both the Obama administration and the Bush administration, the American Association of Museums, the Council of Independent Colleges and the Organization of American Historians.

Deirdre will now be considered for the institute's National History Teacher of the Year award, which will be named in the fall. Best of luck to an inspirational colleague, friend and member of our community.

Sincerely,

Meghan Hanson-Peters
