McElhiney leads way for Club freeskiing team

Steamboat Springs — Payton McElhiney won his division twice last weekend as Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freestyle skiers had strong results at a United States of America Snowboard Association event at Copper Mountain.
McElhiney was tops in both the skier men's 13- to 15-year-old slopestyle and half-pipe divisions.
In slopestyle, he was a part of a Steamboat podium sweep, joined by second-place Ethan Dyer and third-place Kai Doyle. Maxwell Sauerbrey was 10th, Bryce Zetzman 14th, Willie Martin 23rd and Mack Skove 27th in that event.
Elsewhere in slopestyle, Cael McCarthy and Wiley Magner also earned podium spots, finishing second and third respectively in the skier boys 9-and-under division. David Schlicht shined there, too, finishing sixth.
In the boys 10-12 division, Logan Spiegel was sixth, Liam Baxter eighth, Alex Spiegel 25th and Griffen Park 26th.
Parker Temple was 14th in the men's 16-18 division.

Riley Jacobs earned a podium on the girls side, placing third in the girls 10-12 division.
Jacobs was strong in the pipe, too, placing fifth.
Baxter was fourth, Logan Spiegel ninth and Alex Spiegel 11th in the boys 10-12 class while Zetzman was eighth in the men’s 13-15 group, which McElhiney won.
Several former Steamboat Springs athletes did well in the competition, too.
Paula Cooper won the women's open class slopestyle event and was second in half-pipe. Sammy Schuling was second in men's open slopestyle and 11th in pipe. Katie Hitchcock was third in the women's open pipe, and Robby Brown was 15th in the men's open slope style.
