Mark Anthony Evans Lawton
Hayden resident Mark Lawton died Aug. 29, 2003, when the military convoy he was traveling with was ambushed near As Suaydat, Iraq. He was 41.
Mark was born Aug. 16, 1962, in Elkhart, Ind., to Eldon and Verna Evans. Mark was raised in Elkhart, where he attended school until the age of 16, when he moved to Craig.
In 1982, he graduated from Moffat County High School, where he was an outstanding athlete whose track and field records still stand 20 years later.
He went on to join the Army, and then the Marine Corps, with which he served on active duty for more than 10 years. He was on combat duty in Operation Desert Storm in the early 1990s.

Mark married Sherri Holloway on Sept. 12, 1998, in Hayden. The couple has two sons, Dustin Wade and Tanner Lee. Mark was a heavy equipment operator at ColoWyo Coal Co.
He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, being outdoors and, most of all, spending time with his wife and sons.
Mark was a member of the 244th Engineer Battalion of the Army Reserves based out of Grand Junction. He volunteered to deploy to Iraq even though he was scheduled for an Army school stateside.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Eldon.
He is survived by his wife, Sherri Lawton of Hayden; two sons, Dustin Wade and Tanner Lee of Hayden; his mother, Verna Herr of Duluth, Ga.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Louis and Carolyn Holloway of Hayden; a brother, Greg Evans of New York; a sister, Vicki Owens of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two brothers-in-law, Frank Holloway of Craig and Tony Holloway of Greeley; and a sister-in-law, Angie Tate of China Springs, Texas.
Memorial services were held Sept. 5, 2003, in the Routt County Fairgrounds Pavilion.
