Man wanted for stealing SUV finally returns to Routt County

Steamboat Springs — A 27-year-old man who has been wanted since last winter for allegedly stealing a rented sport utility vehicle from a local business is being held in the Routt County Jail on $50,000 bond.
Kevin Lee Martinson was booked into the county’s detention center Friday. Martinson, who was living in Montana, was turned in by officials from the Colorado Department of Corrections.
Martinson appeared in Routt County Court Monday morning. His bond was set by Judge James Garrecht.
According to court records, Martinson allegedly used a stolen credit card to rent a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer, which is worth $32,000, last November.
Martinson allegedly rented the SUV from Steamboat Motor Rentals Nov. 3 and agreed to return the vehicle Nov. 7.
Martinson called the rental company and extended the rental time frame to Nov. 14. When the SUV was never returned to the company, Steamboat Springs police were called to investigate.

By using the credit card’s number, police found out the card had been stolen from a Boulder man, records show.
Along with the rented vehicle, the credit card was also allegedly used at a local hotel Nov. 4 for a $240 bill. One day later the credit card was used to cover a $300 bill at a Grand Junction Hotel, records show.
Martinson was arrested in Las Vegas Dec. 13 when he was spotted in the rented SUV, records show.
His next court appearance is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday.
