Man dies of apparent heart attack at ski area
February 7, 2008
Steamboat Springs — A 62-year-old Virginia man died of an apparent heart attack Thursday morning in the Rendezvous Saddle lodge at the Steamboat Ski Area.
Ski area spokesman Mike Lane said Dennis Chin of Mechanicsville, Va., was pronounced dead by paramedics late Thursday morning. According to Lane, Chin collapsed in a restroom on the third floor of Rendezvous.
Other ski area guests immediately began CPR and had hooked up a public defibrillator unit when ski patrollers arrived. Lane said ski patrollers were in the building at the time of the incident and were on scene within a minute.
Ski Patrol members employed advanced life support measures, Lane said, and transported Chin to the Slope Maintenance Building, where he was pronounced dead.
An official cause of death will be determined after an autopsy.
Chin’s death is the third at the ski area since Jan. 15. Mark Joseph Stout, a 45-year-old from Ottsville, Pa., suffocated to death Jan. 15 after falling into a tree well in Morningside Park. On Jan. 25, Jared Daniel, a 22-year-old from Auburn, Mass., also suffocated to death after falling into a tree well in Morningside Park.
