Steamboat Springs — A 48-year-old Yampa man has been charged with bigamy.
The Routt County Sheriff’s Office arrested Daniel Patrick Thomas Tuesday on suspicion of bigamy, a Class 6 felony, and forgery, a Class 4 felony.
Investigator Ken Klinger said the sheriff’s office was contacted by the State Attorney’s Office in North Dakota. Kathy Thomas, Daniel Thomas’ third wife, contacted North Dakota officials after discovering her husband was living in Yampa with a fourth wife.
Kathy Thomas and Daniel Thomas married in 1997 in Arapahoe County and lived in Rifle. Daniel Thomas later left Kathy Thomas and married a fourth wife, Linda Thomas, in 2002.
Linda Thomas and Daniel Thomas were married in Routt County and lived in Yampa, Klinger said.
Daniel Thomas was hiding from Kathy Thomas in Yampa, Klinger said. However, Kathy Thomas had relatives who lived in Yampa and spotted her husband. After the relatives told Kathy Thomas her husband was living in Yampa with another woman he had married, she contacted the North Dakota State Attorney’s Office.

The North Dakota office contacted the local District Attorney’s Office, who contacted the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office believes the fourth wife, Linda Thomas, did not know her husband was still married. Knowingly marrying a bigamist also could be a crime, Klinger said.
Daniel Thomas divorced his first two wives. But, Klinger said, while there are records documenting his marriages to Kathy and Linda Thomas, there is no documentation indicating he ever divorced either woman.
Daniel Thomas also was charged with forgery because of false information police say he provided to receive a marriage license in Routt County.
The District Attorney’s Office could not be reached for comment on what penalties Daniel Thomas faces in connection with the bigamy charge.
Daniel Thomas’ bond was set at $2,000. He will appear in Routt County Court Tuesday.
